Eloxatin...Bridge to More Tomorrows

Eloxatin in combination with infusional 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV):

  • Significantly reduces recurrence in adjuvant treatment of stage III colon cancer:
    • Eloxatin + 5-FU/LV is indicated for adjuvant treatment of stage III colon cancer in patients who have undergone complete resection of their primary tumors. The indication is based on an improvement in disease-free survival, with no demonstrated benefit in overall survival after a median follow-up of 4 years.
    • Eloxatin + infusional 5-FU/LV has demonstrated significant reduction in the risk of recurrence (vs. infusional 5-FU/LV alone), reducing the risk of recurrence by 24% overall in patients who have undergone surgery to remove their primary tumors.

With a median of 12 cycles administered, Eloxatin + infusional 5-FU/LV improves survival in patients with stage III colon cancer.

  • Significant increase in disease-free survival vs. 5-FU/LV:
    • 75.9% vs. 68.1% (P=0.002)
  • Significantly extends survival in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC):
    • Eloxatin + infusional 5-FU/LV is indicated for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer.
    • Eloxatin + infusional 5-FU/LV demonstrated longer median survival, increased time-to-tumor progression and higher response rate vs. irinotecan plus bolus 5-FU/LV (IFL).

With a median of 10 cycles administered, Eloxatin + infusional 5-FU/LV extends efficacy in patients with advanced carcinoma of the colon or rectum.

  • Significant overall survival advantage vs. IFL:
    • 19.4 months vs. 14.6 months (P<0.0001)
Managing Patient Expectations
Chemotherapy treatment for some colorectal cancer patients can be challenging as they work to complete a successful course of treatment. Health care professionals can help encourage their patients by educating them on the treatment's side effects.

Clinical Safety Considerations

ELOXATIN should be administered under the supervision of a physician experienced in the use of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Appropriate management of therapy and complications is possible only when adequate diagnostic and treatment facilities are readily available.

Anaphylactic-like reactions to ELOXATIN have been reported and may occur within minutes of ELOXATIN administration. Epinephrine, corticosteroids, and antihistamines have been employed to alleviate symptoms, and discontinuation of ELOXATIN therapy may be required.
